Default Improving performance

Is there any way to improve the game performance, besides scaling all the graphic options way down? I have a below average computer, and all graphic options are low/off for me. My usual FPS is around 20, which is definitely playable and not something that bothers me, but some areas bring me down to 10-15, and that's when it starts to get bad. Is there any way I can raise my FPS without buying new hardware when my settings are already at the lowest?

I don't actually have my exact computer stats, but I don't think it matters that much anyway. It's a 2ghz Athlon something, with 1gig ram and a mediocre video card that came with the storebought computer.

well the obvious springs to mind:

- defragmentation
- uninstall unused programs
- check for and remove spy-/mal-ware, viruses
- minimize the amount of programs running
(that is, kill stupid crap like msn, anything that possibly hogs resources)
edit: note that the above is not in order! you should defragment your hard drive after removing stuff otherwise you can start defragging again

and the only thing that will help the most however:
- get a new video card
because honestly at 2ghz and 1 gig of ram your video card is probably what's bringing you down.

another edit: I just checked my game. I'm running GW on this comp with the graphic slider about two-thirds from lowest to highest (so defenitely not everything turned off)
Right now, i'm on an Athlon XP 2800+ (2,08GHz) with 768Mb RAM with a Radeon 9200 vid card(128Mb RAM) and I'm getting about 23-25 fp on average with drops as low as 15 in "difficult" bits.
Now my vid card is ancient, yours is steampowered? Because if we have comparable vid cards something else is going on.

Look for the tips I posted here, might be useful and minimizing lag. It worked for me, and til now for all the people who I advised to do so.
Also, you might want to think of partitioning your harddrive, but that would cause you to format first. Let me know if you want to know how. And you need 3-4 gb of unused space (consistent, not chopped up)

Defragmentation is a tip of the iceberg that could help. Here more points.

[ makes big changes ]
- tweaking graphics options in GW, do not ask more then gfx card can handle
- adding more MB Ram, 1 gb makes big difference compared to 512 or 256
- when running GW, don't run more then 1 program on the background, best is nothing.
- turn of certain services from task bar, like: quicktime, loads of anti-virus crap and another stuff which eat Processing power of your pc durning play.

[ small changes ]
- defragmentate your gw.dat file, or whole windows drive
- run game fullscreen instead of windows which runs the game in most cases at higher resolution and so more cpu and gfx power needed to run the game.
- space left on your pc, windows uses temporary dump files to use HD space as virtual memory, when set to 3gb and 1.5gb is left you'll get some problems. You can change this under: control panel - system - performance for each partition or hd drive.

[ last options if really necessary ]
- new gfx card or another technology

Tha's all I came up with so far, and all have some nice effect on your fps in game.
